About Us
The US National Cancer Institute (NCI)
The US National Cancer Institute is the US federal government’s principal agency for cancer research and treatment.
NCI is one of the 27 research institutes that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, located in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. It conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer.
NCI supports scientists all over the world in a broad spectrum of cancer research activities. One such initiative is the NCI Liaison Office in Brussels, the capital of Europe, as a link to NCI’s programs in the United States.
The Europe-based NCI Liaison Office
Created in 1972 as part of NCI’s Division of Cancer Treatment & Diagnosis to promote the acquisition of new potential anti-cancer agents from Europe for NCI’s screening programs, it was originally based at the Institute Jules Bordet in Brussels.
Over the years the activities rapidly expanded to include organization of joint symposia, initiation and coordination of exchange programs, launching of a joint clinical monitoring program and an agreement with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) to coordinate submission of clinical trials to PDQ. In 1990 the office moved to the new headquarters and Data Center of the EORTC in the eastern part of Brussels.
Numerous other collaborations have been established since, and the office is now part of NCI’s Office of International Affairs which is directed by Dr. Joe Harford.
